Export jar -v1.6 path on OSX High Sierra for minecraft server

0

I'm attempting to set up a Minecraft server so my nieces and nephews can all play on the same world. Problem is there are only macs available and java version 6 was the last supported version for the minecraft server jar file. Version 8 is standard for macs right now.

Following instructions Here I've installed java 6 which I understand may be the JRE version and not the JDK version which I may need to setup bash scripts. I'm still not sure though.

Anyway, I've tried to find the path to the jar version 6 to input in the server start command exec java -Xms1G -Xmx1G -jar server.jar nogui and I'm struggling to find it. I read somewhere adding

export JAVA_HOME="/usr/libexec/java_home -v '1.6*'"

to the .bash_profile would do the trick. I get the same error which is

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError:net/minecraft/server/MinecraftServer : Unsupported major.minor version 52.0

which from my understanding is that the jar version is still using 8 (52). java -version shows 1.6 (which is version 6 (50)).

My question is this, do I need to find a supported JDK version 6 for OSX or is there some error in my pathing? If it's my pathing, where is the correct jar to use?

Thanks

  • Download java 8 instead. The minecraft compiling with automatically figure out which version it needs to compile onto. Check openjdk 8, it should've come preinstalled in your system, if not, download it.
