Charles proxy for apps implementing their own TLS with OpenSSL?

I've set up Charles proxy on my local computer and iPad and followed through the instructions for setting up SSL and enable SSL proxy.
I'm able to see the incoming HTTP request/responses but once I enable SSL proxy for the responses I'm interested it, all the responses came back with 401 unauthorized error messages. Prior to installing the SSL proxy, authentication was fine.
For our app, we're implementing our own TLS with OpensSSL. Do I need additional configurations? Or am I missing something?
