Details about bit & byte numbering

0

Right now I'm learning about bit and byte numbering and looking for some background information about this topic. The concepts behind the two conventions are somehow clear to me, but I'm missing some details...

Just to be clear that I understood the basics:

Bit numbering:

Binary data (scheme: LSB 0):

0001 0011

=

1110 1100

Binary data (scheme: MSB 0)

Byte numbering:

Hex data (scheme: big endian):

(a a+1 a+2 a+3)

11 22 33 44

=

44 33 22 11

(a a+1 a+2 a+3)

Hex data (scheme: small endian)

Am I right? Before I have touched this subject, I only knew the (standard?) LSB 0 representation.
But what are the use cases and benefits from these different representations and are they ever mixed (for example: small endian in combination with LSB 0, etc.)?
