jquery - JQuery.format is not a function error

I am trying to validate an image upload here is my script:

$.validator.addMethod('filesize', function(value, element, param) {
return this.optional(element) || (element.files[0].size <= param)
});
$("#merchandiseForm").validate({
rules: {
itemImage: {
required: true,
extension: "png,jpeg,jpg",
filesize: 2000000
}
},
messages: {
itemImage: {
required: "An image is required",
extension: "This is not a valid format",
filesize: "This image must be less than 2MB"
}
}
});
</script>
This is my code after including the library jquery.validate additional methods v1.1.11 i get the error jQuery.format is not a function @ additional-methods.min.js:2. What's wrong?
