Create custom payment gateway that accepts cards

I was thinking to prepare a custom payment gateway using Node js and azure cosmos db for db. Our merchant has a PayPal account.
My client's intial venture is to accept only cards, visa and MasterCard. Once found stable, he might venture to add more cards.
I would like to know what can I look into,what are the pros and cons, what are needed etc.
Any help in this is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance

do you want to USE Stripe or Chargebee? or do you want to CREATE the new Stripe/Chargebee from scratch?
