An even further generalization of IMO 1977 problem 2
I have gone through this link:

However, in the solution that is given how can I prove that the sequence developed will never give me a contradiction as they have obtained when the given example has an assumed length greater than 17?
Also, can the generalization when $gcd(p,q) = d$ be proved, if possible in a little more detail?
The second solution has put an additional constraint. How does that help?
