Connect to OpenVPN from same network

0

I just started messing around with OpenVPN using pivpn (https://github.com/pivpn/pivpn).

Everything works very well by now.

But, how can I test this network?

I tried connecting to it from within the same network, but I assume that does not work since you would try to connect to 'public IP' from that local IP?

I guess it should be enough to run server and client in different subnets, but with access to internet. For example, GSM modem and laptop connecting to office/home WiFi... But, it depends on your hardware and software setup though...

  • Also, if you can't connect to the VPN from the same over public IP; then it probably won't work from another network (GSM/Home/Work). Make sure port forwarding and firewall rules are set correctly.

  • Another way to test the VPN, is to connect from the same network over the VPN machine (I'm guessing this is a PI) IP first to make sure the VPN is up and listening on Globally. If so the move to the public bit; if not fix the VPN first.

  • I have a default router from my ISP and attached to that a TP Deco M5 and the VPN to the TP Deco M5. So which ports should be forwarded to the TP Deco M5?
