Are there two $U(1)$ sub groups of SU(3)

It is my understanding that one can have at most 2 diagonal basis elements of $SU(3)$. In what sense if any do these correspond to $U(1)$ subgroups of SU(3)?

As well, is there any nice classification of the subgroups of $SU(3)$? I've been told there are $SU(2)$ subgroups as well. Any assistance in understanding the structure of $SU(3)$ is appreciated
