Why isn't socket unlinked / removed after the process exits?

0

If I bind and listen to a TCP port, the 'bind' is freed when my program exits.
If I bind and listen to a unix domain socket, the socket remains and the next time my program can't bind the socket. Why is this?
Should I manually unlink the socket before binding?
What if I don't want to disturb an existing instance of my program using the socket?
